Pigtails At The End Of The Rainbow

A recent rainbow was the inspiration for this style.

First I five half french braids into her hair,

And then put her hair into pigtails.

By using a plastic needle (purchased in the craft department at Walmart), I weaved the ribbon into her hair.

This is what it looked like:

The loose ends were tied into bows at each pigtail.

And Aubrey got her rainbow!

Hair Clip Gift

We try to instill the importance of putting thought into gifts so when Aubrey wanted to make a present for her friend's birthday I was excited to help her.

This is what we came up with.

Aubrey painted a flower pot. We filled the pot with glass rocks to hold up the stems (wood dowels).

And I made several bows and flower clips by following the instructions on this site: flower hair clip tutorial

Knotty Curls Updo

This is a really quick updo that does not require any braiding.

If you can tie a shoe, you can do this style!

side view:

We started with damp hair.

I seperated her hair into two pony tails, leaving out the front section. If you are in a hurry or if your daughter's hair is thin, I recomend just making one pony.

Then twist and secure the front section to a pony.

Ribbon was threaded through the two pony tails.

Next, seperate a section of hair into two (at this point I added gel).

Procede like you are tying a knot.

Do not pull tight and continue to make "knots" until you have a long string.

When you reach the end, gather your string of knots on the top of her head and pin.

Repeat with the rest of the hair. For Aubrey, I made three strings of knots in each pony tail.

After her hair was up, I finished the style by "sewing" the ribbon into her curls with a plastic needle just like in our Dressed Up Ballerina Bun tutorial.

And added a side clip.

Total time: 10 minutes without the ribbon

In June my Mom wore this 'do to a banquet.

These pictures were taken afterwards that evening.

Style With Feather Extension, Great For Tweens!

For a birthday present, Aubrey's friend brought her to get a hair and feather extension. She was very excited to show off her new bright pink hair so we came up with this simply sweet 'do.

To start, I parted her hair and grabbed a section in front of and behind the extension, but not including the extension. This was done to ensure the connector bead would not be visible after the style was finished.

Next I french braided around her crown, only taking sections of hair from the top. The braid was ended just short of the back of her head.

Then the other side was braided the same way.

I purposly did not have the braids end directly together so there wouldn't be a part in the finished style. Next I secured the two braids along with the middle section of hair.

And took out the ends of the original braid and added some curls.

In the end she was able to show off her new extension and her hair was kept up and out of her face!

Total braiding time: 10 minutes.

Last all day Messy Bun

I love finishing a 'do with a messy bun but find that it is usually falling out by the afternoon. This is the only way I have found to style a messy bun that will last the entire day.

To start, make a high side pony.

For a little fun, we added colored hair to the pony.

Next, divide the pony into three sections.

Take one section and make a loop.

Secure the loop with a clear elastic (looking back, I wish at this point I would have added a little gel to keep the flyaways down).

Make loops with the other two sections.

Continue to make loops with the rest of the hair.

Add a few booby pins to secure the loops in place covering any visible elastics.

That is it! This took me ten minutes and lasted all day!

Bump without the Bumpits No Back Combing

I not only use this method when doing Aubrey's hair, but also use it on myself!

The best part? No back combing required!

To start, seperate a front section of hair.

Add a small, loose pony behind that section. The amount of hair you use to make this pony will determine the size of your "bump".

Position the pony towards the front of the head to create the bump.

Add bobby pins by using the "X" method. To ensure the bobby pins are secured and the style will last all day, attach them to the base of the hair that is included in the pony. That way it is sure to not go anywhere!

Spray the bump with hairspray and immediately comb the seperated front section of hair over it and secure with pins. *attach the pins to the previous ones for a secure hold using the "X" method*

Then just finish the style however you choose! For this style I crossed hair over each side to cover up the booby pins and attached it to the opposite pony.

Super easy to do and lasts all day (Aubrey wore this for two days).

Loops, Braids, & Ribbon....oh my!

For her first day of dance camp Aubrey wanted a
fancy 'do.

We combined Girly Do Hair Style's For Kimberly 'do with Princess Hairstyle's Patriotic Ribbon Cornrows and our own style. This is what we came up with.

To start, I braided a "X" on the top of her head and again on each side.

Then, divided the remaining hair into three ponies and attached the braids.

After that the ponies were made into loops using our Topsey Tail just like our Super Easy Up 'Do . Lastly, the ribbon was added.

It actually was a pretty simple 'do and lasted through not only dance but the next day of YMCA camp too!

Super Star

We came up with this style for the 4th of July, however anytime your girly wants to be a super star this would be a fun 'do!

Because the parade Aubrey was going to be in for dance was in the morning, we actually started this the night before. First I made three ponies.

I split the top one in two and then put bands in until they were long enough to connect to the side ponies.

Next, I added three more ponies~ one on each side and one in the middle.

Then four more. All of the ponies became anchors. The pony in the middle was split, bands were added, and then attached to the two ponies beneath it, just like the first top pony was. This allowed me to end the style with two pigtails.

My original plan was to add two big bows to the pigtails but they seemed to get in the way of the style.

Total time: 1 hour (luckily it was really hot out and Aubrey was happy to sit in the AC watching a movie)!

Even though it took a long time from start to finish, this style lasted three days so I think it was worth it!

Double Twist

Aubrey wanted a fancy 'do for kindergarten graduation, so this is what we came up with!

To start, I parted her hair from ear to ear and made two small ponies.

Next, I divided the remaining hair in half and secured the top section temporarily.

After watching the video tutorial over at Shaunell's Hair, I attempted a side twist braid. I ended it by anchoring it to one of the small ponies.

Then I took all the hair from the temporary clip and made another side twist braid. With this one I started on the opposite side of her head and ended at the other pony.

Next, I laced it up with ribbon.

Last, I just made some messy buns and added matching bows!

Total time: 25 minutes *This took a little long because I am still learning how to do a twist braid.

All ready for graduation!

Double The Fun Braided Headband

Usually Aubrey's hair is in an updo style but today we were looking for something a little different. This is what we came up with.

To start, I sectioned out the front of her hair and pulled the rest into a pony. Then I parted that hair down the middle of her head and made puff braids on each side.

This is what the top of her head looked like:

Next, added an extra elastic to each side.

Using another elastic, loosely connected the two tails while crossed over each other.

Then, just braided each tail.

Next, I got out my trusty Topsey Tail and used it to weave the braided tails in and out of the puff braid. (sorry for the bad picture)

This is what it then looked like:

I took the ends of the braids and connected them using a clear elastic at the base of her head. If your working with shorter hair, you could make pigtails and just at the ends to them.

Curled the ends of her hair and we were good to go!

This was actually a really quick style! Curling her hair took longer than the rest of the 'do.

It also held up well through the entire weekend!

Libby Lu Inspired 'Do

Before they closed, Aubrey's FAVORITE store was Libby Lu. It has been over a year since they shut their doors yet she still talks about going there. Recently she found this flier that she had saved and asked if I would do her hair just like it.

I had picked up some faux neon hair ($3.99 each/ buy two get one free) on my last trip to Sally's.

To start, I pulled her wet hair into a pony using a clear elastic after sectioning out the front.

Inserted the hair piece and also secured it to the pony.

Added the front section to the pony while covering up the hair piece clip.

Inserted my trusty Topsey Tail.

And made a large loop just like in our post Super Easy Up 'Do~ two ways to wear it!

I divided the tail into two sections, making sure the colored hair from the hair piece was on the opposite side.

And pulled those around each side making another pouf with the Topsey Tail.

At this point I tucked and pinned the tails to cover the elastic and smoothed them into the style with gel.

This is how it turned out:

To dress it up for dance, I added a large flower.

This was a quick 10 minute syle that held up well through an afternoon of playing outside and then an evening of dance!

After seeing the Egg Tails post over at Adopt A 'Do, Aubrey was begging me to put easter eggs in her hair too! I combined that style along with Girly Do Hair Styles post Row of long knots AND the post by Sugar and Spice and all hair nice titled Pulled through and twisted out!

I wasn't planning on posting this so I didn't take pictures for a tutorial but I thought it turned out so cute that I had to post it!

And of course we had to get a few pics with her bunny!

Mohawk Deux

My camera was MIA during this style so I don't have step by step photos but it was pretty easy to do anyway. The evening before, I parted her hair down the middle, sectioned out bangs, and made climbers on each side of her head towards the middle part. Once they reached the middle of her head, I had a total of four ponies plus the bangs. The neon green bands we used kind of added to the rockstar look we were going for ;)

The next morning I used my trusty topsey tail to make poufs with the ponies just like in our post Super Easy Up 'Do ~Two ways to wear it! Then just rolled up the bangs section and pinned them. It turned out to be a fun and funky style!

I think using the topsey tail instead of rolling the hair like we did in our post Funky Faux Mohawk makes this hawk easier. What do you think?

Dressed Up Ballerina Bun

We came up with this cute 'do for dance class!

To start, first I pulled her hair back into a pony tail and then made a sock bun just like in our post Quick and Easy Barbie Bun

I wrapped her hair around the base of the bun and pinned it into place.

Got out my plastic craft needle and ribbon.

And began sewing the ribbon around the bun. The ribbon really helped to hold it into place. **I found it worked best to sew going into the middle of the bun and come out the sides.

At this point I wrabbed and tied a wider ribbon around the base.

You could just tie that ribbon into a bow and leave the ends hanging down. I happen to have a large matching clip.

Then I snipped the ends of the ribbon.

I added a little gel and hairspray to make sure that it lasted through a day of school and then dance class!

I think it also would look cute if you made "X's" with the ribbon around the bun.

Total time~ 10 minutes!

"X Marks the Spot" made easy

I am really busy this week so this is a quick post of my absolute favorite hairstyle.

I saw the "X" Marks the Spot post by Jenn over at Girly Do Hair Styles and fell in love with it immediately! The only problem; I really struggle with dutch braids. In order to pull off the look without the work, I began with seven rope braids. The top of each rope braid was started with a pull through using my trusty "topsey tail" to give it a more finished look.

I then gathered all her hair that was not included in the braids into a low pony and attached the rope braids to it. Everything after this point was the same that Jenn did~ laced it up with ribbon and made a messy bun. Since rope braids are fast and easy, this style actually didn't take that long. Aubrey wore this for the entire weekend and was still receiving compliments on Sunday.

Crown of Bands

I have to confess; I cannot do a side twist braid. No matter how many times

I practice, it never turns out! So Aubrey could still have the "princess crown"

look, we came up with this easy style.

We started with crazy hair this morning due to yesterday's braids.

After it was brushed I made a small side pony.

Then another, adding the previous pony as we went.

**Notice she is eating pears? Many people have asked me how I

get her to sit for hair styles. I do her hair every morning during breakfast

when she is sitting still. It works like a charm!

The ponies continued across her head untill all her hair was included.

Then bands were put in to the end of her hair.

The end was then just wrapped around to where we started and pinned.

We added a flower and she was set to go!

Aubrey got her "crown" and I didn't have to make another attempt

at a side twist braid!

Super Easy Up 'Do ~Two ways to wear it!

This is a quick and easy up 'do! It seriously took me 10 min.

total from start to finish and I was taking pictures too!

To start, I broke out my trusty "Topsy Tail" (bought for only $1 on ebay).

Then made a high side pony, secured with a clear elastic.

Next, the pony was divided into three.

One section was threaded through the topsy tail.

And pulled through under the pony.....

but not all the way,

just until a nice pouf formed.

This was continued with the other two sections on hair.

Depending on how long your girly's hair is, you may want to make more than

one pouf with each section. Aubrey's hair is waist length and I made a

total of three poufs with each section.

The ends were then tucked in with pins.

We added her dance flower clip because she was

having costume pictures taken this afternoon.

After pictures, we spent a few hours at an indoor playground.

This style held up through the entire day!!!

The next day I used the same technique but instead of one pony to start

out with, I put in three. This is the result:

Aubrey's hair is thick so we were able to pull off the look with

three ponies. If you are working with hair on the thinner side,

I would recommend just one pony.

Hope you have as much fun with this style as we did!!!

Quick and Easy Barbie Bun

We love Barbie in our house! After watching Barbie and the Three Musketeers,

Aubrey was begging me to give her a 'do like Barbie's here:

It is hard to tell by the picture but basically the hair is in a smooth bun with a rope

braid around the base.

For this style we used a bun form. Don't have one? Check under TIPS for

instructions on how to make your own!

We started with wet hair.

Next, all her hair was placed into a high pony except for

a small front section.

Then I divided the pony hair in half.

And inserted the bun form around the half hair that was sectioned out.

The hair that came through the form was then smoothed out

to take the shape of the bun.

A clear elastic was placed over the bun to secure it.

I then gathered the ends of the bun hair towards the front of her head.

At this point I had three sections of hair~ the section that was

not included in the bun, the ends of the bun hair, and the bangs portion that

was sectioned out from the original pony.

Each remaining section was rope braided.

The front rope braid was pulled back and attached to the bun

and the remaining two braids were wrapped around the base

and secured with bobby pins.

Of course we had to add a fancy clip!

Our dog loves to watch us do hair!

This bun form is pretty big but isn't everything about Barbie over the top?

Total time: about 10 minutes.

I am thinking this would be a cute 'do for dance class!

Easy Braided Headband

It's A Girl Thing

I then put my own twist on it and this is what we got:

a quick, fun style that keeps the hair

out of Aubrey's eyes and lasts through a day of kindergarten!

To start, I made five ponies on the top of her head

where our "headband" would be.

At this point, her hair that was not in the

ponies was pulled to the side where the "headband"

would end and secured with an elastic.

Next, I braided the first pony.

Then connected that braid to the next pony.

This was continued across her head. The last braid was

added to side pony.

I made a messy bun with the unbraided hair

and added a matching flower clip.

As Aubrey would say "easy, peezy, lemon squeezy"!

Funky Faux Mohawk

After learning how to tie her shoes last weekend, we made a trip to Kohl's and Aubrey picked out these beauties:

I thought a funky 'do was a must to go with them. Last week I read

an article about how the mohawk is making a come back so this is our version!

We started this the night before. I parted her hair down the middle, sectioning out some for "bangs".

Then each part was divided into three ponies.

Next, each pony was french braided towards the middle of her head. I found it work best to do

these braids while she was laying on her side.

After that it was time for bed!

The next morning this is what we had to work with:

I then took hair from each french braid and made a third pony.

Where the french braids ended it looked like this.

Every middle pony was rolled up and pinned.

The rolls were secured by making an "X" with the pins. At this

point it was ok if the pins were showing because the side rolls would soon cover them.

The side ponies were then rolled towards the middle of her head and secured.

Then I rolled up her "bangs".

The funky faux mohawk 'do:

Funky Knotted Buns

Aubrey wanted a funky 'do for hip hop class tonight so this is what we came up with!

First divide the hair into three pony tails.

As you can probably guess by the mess of the middle pony, this one is only temporary.

Next, I took a section from the middle pony and made a shoe-string

knot just like we did in our Knotty Headband post.

The ends of the knot were then secured to each side pony with

a clear elastic.

I continued these knots with the remaining middle hair section.

Made messy buns with the ponies,

and added a cute flower clip!

Then, our quick 10 minute funky 'do was done!

Pigtails With Slide Braids & Ribbon

This 'do uses the same ribbon/slide braid technique from yesterday's style. To start out, I zig-zag parted two pigtails.

Next I attached a ribbon to each pigtail. ***I used wide ribbon today because I really wanted it to be noticeable and planned on using it for bows in the style.

Then take a small section of hair and make a slide braid in each pigtail using one ribbon end for the third strand of hair. For step by step instructions, see yesterdays style HERE

At this point each pigtail should have a long section of hair and a slide braid that looks like this:

Now take the ribbon tail that was not included in the slide braid and tie a bow with the tail from the braid. Basically the slide braid is now being wrappend around the pony to look like a bun and the pony is now coming out of the middle of it. Repeat on other side.

I think this style would give fullness to thin hair from the added ribbon.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures, we were in quite a hurry this morning, it actually looked a lot cuter in person!

Buns With Ribbons~ would work for shorter hair too

Aubrey had her heart set on wearing these huge flowers in her hair tonight for bring a friend to class week at dance. Knowing that Monday mornings are really hard in our house, I started this style last night after her shower. When her hair was wet I put three half french braids in. **If you are busy or not confident in french braiding or are working with shorter hair, you could easily skip this step and instead put three pony tails in.

The next morning I tied a ribbon to each pony tail. I used a thin brown ribbon because I wanted it to blend in with her hair since we were planning on placing flowers in later. The ribbons themselves look really cute with this style and if you don't plan on using other accessories to dress it up, I recommend choosing one that matches her outfit and stands out in her hair.

Next, divide pony in half. Then make a loose braid using one end of the ribbon as your third strand.

Braid as far as you can go and end with the ribbon strand in the middle.

While holding onto the ribbon with one hand, slide the two hair strands up towards the top of the pony tail.

When you can't slide any further, tie off the end with a clear elastic.

Now take both ribbon ends and tie a bow, this will also make the bun.

Repeat previous steps on other two pony tails.

We left it like this for school.

Tonight for dance we will add these flowers for a look like this:

I think this would be a cute flower girl style, maybe with not so large of flowers. What do you think?

First Post~ Knotty Headband

For the pass few months I have been obsessed with following blogs. I start everyday by checking to see if there are any new posts by my favorite bloggers! Now that my good friend Missy started her own blog, she has inspired me to do the same! This particular hairstyle happens to be one that Aubrey wore to a birthday party at Missy's house. Hope you enjoy it!

Aubrey had a pink headband with a bow on it that matched the dress she was going to wear perfectly. The problem: headbands NEVER stay in her hair. So we improvised a little.

To start we gathered our supplies: bobby pins, brush, comb, headband, and wet set lotion from Sally's.

Next I misted her hair with water and parted it behind her ears, pulling the hair that would not be included in the headband into a temporary pony tail. I then made a side part where the bow on the beadband would be.

Then I made a horizontal part with the headband hair, temporary clipped it off to the sides and inserted the head band.

At this step I thoroughly misted her hair with the prepared wet set lotion (2-3 parts water to 1 part lotion). Next comes the knots. I unclipped the headband hair and grabbed a small section from both sides.

Those two sections of hair were then tied just like when you tie shoe laces.

Looking back now, I would have made the first knot actually under the bow. Next I continued the knots down the headband, adding a little more hair each time from both sides (similar to french braiding).

When I reached the other side, I tied it off with a clear elastic.

I repeated the first steps on the other side. Again, next time I would make my first knot directly under the bow to hide more of the headband.

At this time I pulled all the hair from the back that was in the temporary ponytail into a side ponytail right where my first row of knots ended. Next, I took the tail from my second row of knots and included it into the side ponytail using pins to secure it, covering up the back part at the same time to give it a more finished look.

I curled the ends of the pony and this is what we had:

Total time: about 20 minutes.

We spent the entire next day at home. Even though I slipped the headband out, the style seemed to stay in (thanks to the wet set lotion). You can kind of see it in this picture of Aubrey with her AG doll and the x-mas tree she decorated all by herself!
